If you are searching for your next island getaway, looking for inspiration on where to vacay or planning your island hopping itinerary... This travel blog is for you!

Introducing our guest blogger:

Lisa aka @milzmum

Hi there. I’m Lisa Mullin, a full-time occupational therapist/part-time beach bum, island lover, and blogger.

Currently based in lovely Sarasota on the southwest coast of FL, I spend as much time as possible hitting the area beaches and frolicking with the marine life via paddleboard.

My passion for islands and beaches started as a child with family trips to Bermuda and the BVI’s and blossomed into a full-blown obsession during a stint as a flight attendant for American Airlines in my early 20’s. Years later while living in MN, I regularly escaped the frigid winters by heading to tropical beaches with my daughter.

The precious memories we made on these island trips was the inspiration behind My Mermaid Soul,  a blog featuring luxury beach travel and coastal style on a budget.

I’m so honored to share my experience of Anguilla, one of the most stunning Caribbean islands I’ve ever laid eyes on, with the readers of the Dushi Designs “My Island” travel blog.

1. What inspired you to visit Anguilla?

I was drawn to Anguilla as it is a lesser-known Caribbean island with pristine sugar sand beaches, a luxury international clientele, and top notch dining.

2. Who did you travel with? Solo? Family? Friends?

I traveled with my friend and co-worker, Ashley. She is an avid international traveler, best with a camera, and a whole lotta fun!

3. What were the locals you met like?

The locals were without a doubt the warmest, nicest people I have come in contact with in the Caribbean. They made our trip so memorable.

A perfect example of this is when Ashley and I were photographing one of the lovely island churches during a Sunday service. A local boy approached us after the service, asked to have his picture taken, then invited us into the chapel next door for Sunday school. He was so friendly and engaging, like everyone we encountered in Anguilla.

4. Did you find any sights or activities off the beaten track?

My favorite spot was the Anguilla Arch on the far western side of the island. We got lost trying to find it but it was so worth it! Standing atop this spectacular natural limestone arch that jutted into the ocean with panoramic  views of the sea and coral reefs beneath was one of the highlights of my trip to Anguilla.

5. What was your favourite meal?

Definitely Blanchard’s. I had wanted to dine at this iconic restaurant for more than 20 years after purchasing their cookbook, At Blanchard’s Table.

Ashley and I went to Blanchard’s main restaurant on our last night in Anguilla. They also have a more casual beach shack next door (see photo below). Set in a meandering garden adorned with string lights and set on spectacular Mead’s Bay beach, Blanchard’s has a sort of hamptons-meets-the-caribbean vibe. We sampled a variety of small plates from their tapas-style menu as well as some delicious desserts (I highly recommend the cracked coconut). Everything was fantastic!

I also loved Madeariman, set on Shoal Bay and just a short walk down the beach from our hotel.  I highly recommend the lobster pizza and the sunsets from this place are epic!!

6. What's your top 3 recommended hot spots in Anguilla?

1. The Arch for spectacular island views from the limestone cliffs.

2. Sandy Island for the ultimate deserted island experience.

3. Any of the island beaches - my favorites were Shoal Bay and Mead’s Bay. The clarity of the water is really unimaginable!

7. What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?

We took a day trip to Sandy Island, a small cay just a short boat ride from Anguilla. Sandy Island was destroyed by hurricane Irma but nature brought her back and it is a true Robinson Crusoe experience. The cay is basically a giant sand bar with a rustic but very tasty restaurant serving delicious seafood and cocktails, a pristine beach, and superb snorkeling.

8. Tell us one fun fact about Anguilla.

Anguilla is the only country to feature a dolphin on its flag. It actually features 3 orange dolphins leaping in a circle. They represent endurance, unity, and strength.

9. Name your favourite hotel/AirBnB on Anguilla and tell us why you would recommend to stay there.

I stayed at Shoal Bay Villas and absolutely loved it! The hotel consists of 24 villas set directly on the powdery sands of stunning Shoal Bay.  It is very private and peaceful and the staff at the hotel were warm, engaging, and attentive. If you go, be sure to say hello to the manager’s adorable dog, Gizmo. I can hardly wait to go back!

10. Where's next on your bucket list? Let us know which cool destinations you will be traveling to soon.

My next stop is Exuma. I’m so excited to explore this island chain in the Bahamas with reportedly some of the most gorgeous water in the world!
